First published in 1949, 1984 is a dystopian vision of the future where a single political party rules over Oceania and tells the story of Winston Smith; from his early rebellion against the Party, his affair with Julia and his eventual capture by the Thought Police. The book is very dark in tone and isn’t likely to cheer you up after reading it…
The book is interesting as it has given us a number of concepts that have become part of everyday language, including Room 101, Doublethink, Thought Police and of course “Big Brother is watching you”.
An interesting read. Overall Rating: 4/5
