I’ve decided to try something new to this blog in a vain attempt to get some more traffic. So, without further ado here is my first review of a software tool.

Preceden (www.preceden.com) is a online tool that enables you to create good looking timelines quickly and easily. I used it to create a timeline of our development roadmap at work and found it great tool to use. The resulting timeline looked really nice, it was quick to do, and it was easy to use.

There are as couple of things that need work. Firstly, dates have to be in American format but this is not too bad as you can enter them longhand (3 March 2010, for example). Secondly, the start day of a week on the diagram is today; so if you look at the diagram on a Wednesday all the weeks on the diagram start on a Wednesday. I have raised a suggestion for a new feature to cover this, so we’ll see if that makes any difference.

A great little tool with the added advantage that it’s free to use.
